1916 Seachtar na Cásca - Documentary
This documentary which was aired on TG4, is a detailed and emotive overview of the history of the Rising and the journey of the historical characters of ‘1916- The Musical’ and their part in the revolution.
Seachtar na Cásca is a 7-part historical documentary series of immense importance. The series examines the lives of the 7 signatories of the Proclamation. In 1916 these seven men signed the proclamation, knowing that they were signing their own death warrant. But what made these ordinary men do such a thing? What in their lives or nature made them decide that this was the move to make?
 |
Seachtar na Cásca looks for these answers. It examines and dramatisies a part of history often sidestepped in recent years. This coming together of like-minded individuals to plan, plot and carry out the 1916 Rising is still affecting the lives of everyone in Ireland today. Its legacy goes on.
Like the musical, this documentary breathes life into the memories of a nation, creating a moving and emotional portrayal of the seven main figures of the 1916 Rising.
The first episode focuses on the life of Tom Clarke, an iconic figure who through his lifetime involvement in the Fenians became one of the most important figures in Ireland’s fight for freedom (for more information see http://www.irelandseye.com/aarticles/history/events/dates
/fenmove.shtm)
This documentary gives a voice and life to the people who this rebellion affected, from the head of the military committee to the women involved in the movement. It includes some interesting facts about this historical event, and some emotional scenes, such as Tom Clarke’s wife discussing their final farewell before his execution in Kilmainham Jail, as well as letters written by Clarke in both his Dublin cell and whilst imprisoned in London, creating a very human face for a man who was deeply passionate about his beliefs.
The second episode explores James Connolly. A socialist born to Irish parents in the slums of Edinburgh, James spent his life struggling against economic injustice, which fuelled his hatred for the British Army and the Empire. When looking at his involvement in the fight for equal rights for all workers and the economic struggles of the Irish Nation at this time, we can draw parallels with the economic turmoil in Ireland, post Celtic Tiger.
This documentary provides a well researched beginners guide to the heroes of the Rising and the makers of history.
